Birds Eye Ball

Sometimes my job takes me to some cool places in NY - I always make sure to look out the window and my trusty point and shoot lives in my brief case.  Last night was one of those times.  I was at a presentation in the Thompson Reuters building which is across the street from 1 Times Square and this is the Ball that drops on New Years - so I'm only 11 months and 8 days late for this year.  But it's definitely a different persepective.  That must be a cool fringe benefit of working there, getting to see the show on new years eve with a great view, indoors and warm, and able to have all the booze you want without being subjected to pat and frisk by the NYPD.

Working For The Weekend

This will be my weekend.  Amazingly 2/3 of the leaves are still on the only tree in my yard - it's literally just raining leaves.  Last years total was 33 bags of leaves.  I'm fortunate that much of the tree extends over the fence line - my annual gift to the neighbors.

Yeah, Like Your Own Tow Truck

Of course, the Corolla doesn't need one.  Mr Goodwrench's home phone number could come in handy.

Brought to you by Too Big To Fail - Bailout Motors.

Sorry for the poor photo quality - cellphone shot, but I just couldn't resist this one.

Moo for Cow Harbor

Each year, the Great Cow Harbor 10K Race returns to Northport NY on Long Island.  Because over 5,000 runners compete, they do a staggered start.  While waiting for your group to start you are entertained by a guy in a cow suit with a big red appendage.

This year, Earl from the lodge sold the most raffle tickets for the big screen TV, so he got to be the official starter.

The rooting section included Maude, a 190 LB English Mastiff, who's paws are larger than the womans feet in the sandals behind her.  Maude is owned by a nice gent, who works for Canon Cameras, so that made for some pleasant convo.  He assured me that this year Maude had not yet eaten any runners.

This is actually some sort of TAC national race, so every year they fly in a Kenyan to win it and he gets to wear number 1.  The Kenyan (who is so skinny he actually floats, as shown in the photo) comes with his own film crew seen on the motorcycle, making an IMAX film and in this case yelling at number 5 (from Sweden, judging by the colors) for having the gall to pull ahead with only a half mile to go, potentially ruining the film.

It's going to be close

And the Umpire ruled him safe.  Whoops!

Mono Piper

The other day I went to a wildlife preserve to photograph birds.  While I was shooting sandpipers I noticed that one was hopping rather than walking.  I quickly realized that it only had one leg.  It appears that this bird was born this way and to it one leg is normal.  We rarely see wild animals with disabilities thrive but this one seems to have done it.

The Real McCoy

It happens once a year.  Passover has come again.

For Jews all over the world, its a major celebration.

But, everyone benefits.  The High Fructose Corn Syrup that has sweetened Coke for decades (supplanting sugar) is not Kosher for Passover.  So Coke makes the old version with Sucrose (which is code for good old genuine sugar), which is Kosher.  It has the magic yellow cap.  Stock up now because it will be gone soon.
